Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Morningside

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team overcame a slow start to defeat Morningside on Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa. The win, Dordtís eighth of the GPAC season, came 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18.
Morningside raced to a 12-5 lead with Gabi French putting a kill away. Dordt strung together three points in a row to cut the gap to 12-8 as Elizabeth Kiel recorded one of her ten kills in the run. The two teams traded points to 15-10. Dordt would score six of the next seven points to tie it at 16-16. The score was tied 18-18 before Morningside scored back to back points. The two teams traded points to stand 21-19 with Morningside still in front. A Meghan Krausman kill started a Dordt run that didnít end until the set was finished. Dordt recorded the final two points of the set on blocks for the final of 25-21.
Set two was similar with Morningside getting up 12-5. Dordt mounted another run and eventually tied it at 23-23. Back to back kills by Vondrak gave Morningside a 25-23 win and tied it 1-1 in the match.
The momentum swung squarely to Dordtís favor in set three with the Defenders taking a 10-6 lead on a Kiel kill. The Defenders were able to build the lead to 22-14 and looked like they would breeze into set four with a 2-1 lead. Dordt eventually did get the 2-1 lead but it came with some tense moments as the Mustangs put together a four point run and eventually had the lead down to 24-22. After a Dordt timeout Morningside had an attack off an overpass that was misplayed into the net and resulted in an attack error for the final point of the set.
Set four was tied at one, two and three points but the Defenders were able to get out to a 9-7 lead. Morningside tied it at 9-9 on a Michaela Kennedy kill and a Dordt attack error. Dordt never relinquished the lead and got up 15-12 with the Mustangs tying it again at 15-15 and it was deadlocked at 17-17 after a Dordt miscue. In the process Lindsay Floen had a bloody nose on a collision during the play. Floen had to leave the match . A Gesink kill and a Celaine Haan ace serve put the Defenders up 19-17 and after Morningside timeout the Defenders rolled off five more points to lead 24-17. A Kecia Verburg kill stopped the run momentarily but Floen got a kill on the next rally and Dordt won 25-18.
Dordt hit .358 for the match and was led by Jenna Horstmanís 18 kills and Floenís 13. Elizabeth Kiel added ten and Gesink put up 47 assists. Kayla Broekhuis had 23 digs and Haan three ace serves as Dordt improves to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Morningside was topped by Vondrak with 18 kills and French had 10. Tyann Buddenhagen and Hannah Roberg had 24 and 19 assists each and Vondrak had a team high 16 digs.
Morningside falls to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in the GPAC and will travel to Northwestern in a week. Dordt will face Hastings on the road on Saturday. The Broncos are 8-2 in the league and are tied with Dordt for second in the GPAC.
