Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

(Lincoln, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team lost a Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball match to the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves on Friday night, September 27 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Defenders never led in sets one and two, dropping the contests 26-24 and 25-22. The Defenders led early in set three before dropping the set and the contest 25-21.
Dordt trailed from the start in set one, getting down 4-1 before stringing together four points to tie it at 5-5 on an Elizabeth Kiel kill. Wesleyan pulled away by scoring six of the next seven points to get up 11-6 and the Defenders were fighting from behind again. Two kills by Jenna Horstman and a kill by Kiel cut a 16-11 difference down to 16-14 and the Defenders eventually got even at 24-24 on a kill by Brooke Wolterstorff and a ball handling error on the Prairie Wolves. Wesleyan got a kill to retake the lead at 25-24 and a ball handling error on the Defenders gave the hosts the win in set one.
Set two had the two teams exchange points at the start of the set but the Defenders would never led, tying the game at 9-9 on an attack error. Wesleyan got the lead up to three points at 15-12 and the Defenders never got closer than two the rest of the way before losing 25-22.
Set three saw the two teams exchange points to an 11-11 tie. The early going featured ten ties up to the deadlock at 11. Wesleyan scored the next three points on an attack error, a ball handling error and a serve reception error that resulted in an ace. The Prairie Wolves steadily pulled away, building a 22-16 lead before Dordt mounted another comeback that came up short 25-21.
Dordt hit .185 for the match and had 24 attack errors. The Defenders totaled 46 kills to Nebraska Wesleyan’s 40. Dordt had 48 digs to 46 for the hosts and the Prairie Wolves had a 9-6 block advantage. Both teams had five service errors.
Brooke Wolterstorff had 12 kills and Jenna Horstman 10 while Lindsey Floen had eight. Kayla Gesinkput up 37 assists and had five digs while Kayla Broekhuis had a match high 21 digs. Wesleyan was led by Malory Dahl’s nine kills and Alyssa Stanek and Mackenzie Ashton both had eight.
Both Dordt and Nebraska Wesleyan are 3-2 in league play with Dordt standing 11-4 overall and Nebraska Wesleyan 11-2. Dordt will face Midland in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday. The varsity contest follow a junior varsity match that starts at 1:30.
