Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Northwestern

September 24, 2013

(Sioux Center, Iowa) A match up of top-20 teams in NAIA volleyball didn’t disappoint Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center as the Dordt Defenders and Northwestern Red Raiders battled to the limit with Northwestern prevailing 3-2 in the fourth GPAC match of the season for both teams.

Dordt, no. 19 in the most recent NAIA Coaches’ Poll released on Tuesday, fell behind 2-0 before fighting back to win sets three and four to force the decisive fifth set. Northwestern, who moved to no. 7 in the poll released earlier in the day, took control of the fifth set with three straight points to pull away from a 6-6 tie and went on to win 15-10.

Set one had the Raiders up 12-9 after a Kaitlin Floerchinger kill and the teams traded serves until Dordt was finally able to score four out of five points to turn a 20-17 deficit into a 21-21 tie when Northwestern was called for a ball handling error. Northwestern used a time out and got two points in a row and went on to win the set 25-23.

Set two had nine early ties and saw the Defenders get up 16-14 when Brooke Wolterstoff knocked down a kill and Northwestern had an attack error. Dordt was still up 18-15 when Northwestern put together a charge that saw them reel off four points in a row with Floerchinger getting back to back kills to close the run. The teams were tied at 19-19 and 20-20 before Northwestern got up 24-21. Dordt was able to fight off set point with a kill by Wolterstorff and a hitting error by Northwestern. A Northwestern timeout followed and Wolterstorff knotted it at 24-24 with another kill. Northwestern then scored on a Brooke Fessler shot to the back row and Floerchinger ended it with a kill.

After the extended break between sets two and three the Defenders regrouped and got up to a quick 5-3 lead in set three. Northwestern tied it eventually at 7-7 and it was tied again at 9-9. The Defenders put together a three point run with a Gesink kill, a Jenna Horstman kill and a Northwestern error. Northwestern eventually closed the gap to 22-20 after trailing 22-17 but a Wolterstorff kill followed by two Northwestern errors allowed Dordt to win 25-20.

Back to back service aces by Jocelyn Bousema started set four for the Defenders and Dordt led by as many as five before holding off Northwestern down the stretch for a 25-23 win. A Hortsman kill and Floen kill bookended two Wolterstoff kills as the two teams went sideout for the last eight points.

Set five looked to be as close as the first four sets until Northwestern reeled off three points in a row with two of them coming off Floerchinger kills and Dordt got no closer than two before falling 15-10.

Dordt was led by Lindsey Floen and Brooke Wolterstorff with 20 kills each and Jenna Horstman added 15. Meghan Krausman added seen and Elizabeth Kiel four. Gesink put up 60 assists and had seven digs. Northwestern was topped by Floerchinger’s 23 kills and Karlie Schut added 17. Brooke Fessler had 52 assists and Alexis Bart led all players with 22 digs. Kayla Broekhuis topped Dordt with 11 digs and Siri Nelson got credit for ten.

Dordt is 11-3 and will take a 3-1 GPAC record into their matches with Nebraska Wesleyan and Midland this weekend. Northwestern improves to 20-1 overall and 4-0 in the GPAC.
