Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College volleyball team earned its third win in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and its eighth win in a row with a 3-1 win over the visiting Hastings College Broncos on Saturday, September 21. Dordt entered the match no. 20 in the country while Hastings was no. 25.

The Defenders pulled away late in set one to win 25-19; came from behind to win 25-21 in set two; dropped a marathon length set three 33-31; and won set four 25-17.

Dordt trailed in set one by a 6-3 count before tying the set at 7-7 on a Lindsey Floen kill. The kill was the first of three straight points by the Defenders as they built a 9-7 advantage. Hastings was never able to retake the lead and Dordt won the set on an attack error by the visitors.

Set two had the Broncos in control most of the way and they held a 19-16 lead after a kill by Lindy Matthews. A Dordt timeout stopped the momentum and Brooke Wolterstorff scored two kills out of the next three Dordt points to tie the set at 19-19. The contest was tied at 20-20 and21-21 before Dordt went on a four point run to close the contest. Dordt’s last point came on one of 10 blocks the Defenders recorded.

Set three was close early as neither team was able to put together a long run of points. Dordt eventually led 21-18 but the Broncos scrapped their way to a 23-23 tie on a Shayna Schacher kill. Dordt fought of five Hastings set point serves, eventually getting a chance to win themselves at 30-29 after Brooke Wolterstorff recorded a kill. Hastings got a kill on the next point and after it was tied at 31-31, the Broncos scored two in a row on a pair of Dordt attack errors to win the set.

Set four was tied eight times up to a 12-12 tie. Dordt was able to get up 16-13 and the Defenders rode the momentum of that run to seal the win 25-17.

Dordt hit for a .306 kill efficiency and limited Hastings to .148 success at the net. Dordt was helped by 33 Hastings attack errors and another 16 service errors. Dordt recorded ten points on blocks and another four on ace serves.

Dordt got 14 kills by Floen and 12 by Wolterstorff. Horstman added eight and Elizabeth Kiel had seven while Meghan Krausman had six. Kayla Gesink put up 41 assists with 11 digs and four kills. Kayla Broekhuis had 11 digs and Floen was in on seven blocks.

Hastings was topped by Katie Zoucha and Schacher with 17 and 13 kills respectively and Chandelle Davidson had 46 assists.

Dordt is 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the league while Hastings goes to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC. Dordt will host Northwestern in its next outing on Tuesday, September 24.
