Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team fought back the challenge Morningside presented Wednesday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at a hot and steamy De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders came back after dropping set one 25-22 to win sets two and three 25-19 and 25-21. Set four saw Morningside hold off a late Dordt charge to win 25-23 but the Defenders rode the momentum of the late charge to a win of 15-6 in set five to secure their second win in the GPAC and tenth overall.

Dordt had things going its way eary in set one as they built a 13-9 lead but the visitors tied it at 16-16 on a Tyann Buddenhagen ace serve and they got up 18-16 by virtue of a four point run. Dordt tied it at 19 and 20 but the Mustangs always had an answer before Kecia Verburg won it for the Mustangs 25-22.

Set two had the Defenders pull away from a 8-8 tie to lead 12-8, punctuating the run with a Lindsey Floen kill. Morningside came within 19-17 but four points in a row by the Defenders put the hosts up by an insurmountable 23-17 lead before winning 25-19.

Morningside controlled the early going in set three and looked poised to take a 2-1 match lead. The Mustangs took advantage of three hitting errors and a ball handling error by the Defenders to take a 6-2 lead. Dordt fought back to tie the set at 9-9 but the Mustangs had a four point answer to seemingly take the momentum back. A pair of Jenna Horstman kills during a four points out of five run by the Defenders got Dordt to within striking distance. A Brooke Wolterstorff kill tied it at 15-15 and the two teams were tied at 16, 17 and 18. A Kayla Gesink kill put Dordt up for good at 19-18 and a block and Lindsey Floen kill got the Defenders up 21-18. Morningside would close the gap to 21-20 but an Elizabeth Kiel kill ended the set and put Dordt up 2-1.

Set four started much the same as set three with Morningside getting up 6-1 and they led by as many as many as eight at 20-12. A Floen kill started a run of four points that got the Defenders rolling as they blocked their way to three straight points. A Maggie Vondrak kill stopped the Dordt run but Meghan Krausman and Floen had back to back blocks to cut it to 21-18. Sarah Horn called a timeout for the Mustangs and they regrouped with a Gabi French kill but Wolterstorff, Gesink and Horstman all produced counters for Dordt and made it 22-21. French and Wolterstorff exchanged kills and Verburg got the visitors to set point with a kill before the Mustangs won it 25-23.

Dordt raced to a 5-2 lead in set one and was up 6-4 when Wolterstorff and Vondrak again exchanged kills. A Horstman kill followed by a block put the Defenders up 8-4. A pair of Kayla Broekhuis ace serves made it 10-4, effectively putting the set out of reach. Jocelyn Bousema recorded her third ace serve of the match and Siri Nelson her second and Dordt won the set going away 15-6.

Dordt was led by Floen and Wolterstorff with 17 and 16 kills respectively. Horstman added ten and Kayla Gesink had eight to go with 53 assists. Bousema had a team high 14 digs and Wolterstorff 11. Floen was in on six blocks for Dordt.

Morningside was topped by Gabi French’s 21 kills and Maggie Vondrak had 15. Grace Chvatal had 16 digs.

Dordt is now 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC while Morningside falls to 0-2 and 7-4. Dordt will host Hastings on Saturday, September 21 in a match up of ranked teams.
