(Bellevue, Nebraska) Dordt College faced #3 Columbia (Missouri) in volleyball on Friday night at a weekend classic hosted by Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. The Defenders lost the first two sets 25-14 and 25-11 before fighting back to take set three 29-27 but lost a tight 25-23 decision in set four to finish the match.

Columbia went out to a 10-4 lead in set one and could never mount a comeback in falling 25-14. Set two was similar in that the Cougars got in front 16-3 and rode that advantage to the 25-11 win.

Dordt showed some composure in set three. The Defenders trailed almost the entire set, falling behind 21-17 late in the contest. After a Dordt timeout the teams traded points and Columbia was up 22-18. A Meghan Krausman kill and three Cougar attack errors tied the set. The teams traded points to a 26-26 tie when Dordt got a kill by Katelyn Schuller to take the lead for the first time since a 2-0 advantage. Columbia tied it on an attack error but Schuller got the Defenders to set point with another kill and the Defenders won it on a block by Loy Sahr and Danae Geels.

"Tonight we played a tough tea and we also showed that we are a tough team. I really liked our focus in the third and fourth set with aggressive serving, strong blocking, purposeful attacking and team unity," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson.

Set four featured 15 ties through 22-22 but a service and kill put the Cougars up 24-22 and they won by the final of 25-23.

Dordt was led by Schuller's 12 kills while Danae Geels had nine. Dordt hit .270 for the match. Kayla Gesink put up 33 assists and had seven digs with two solo and two assisted blocks. Kayla Broekhuis had a team high 14 digs and Lindsey Floen had seven kills.

Columbia was paced by Kahoriz Feliz with 20 kills and Brooke Simpson had 15. Paula Ferreira had 58 assists and Aleah Hayes got to four ace serves.

Dordt is now 18-5 overall and will face Viterbo (Wisconsin) and Taylor (Indiana) on Saturday. Both teams are rated in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.

"A completely different style of opponent awaits us tomorrow," said Hanson.
