Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Midland

(Fremont, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defenders won their second five-set match of the week and their seventh in as many attempts in a 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10 win over the #21 ranked Midland Warriors in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, October 6. Dordt improved to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in league play at the midpoint of the GPAC season while the Warriors fell to 5-3 and 13-8 after the only regular season meeting of the two teams.
Dordt got out to an 11-7 lead in set one only to see Midland fight back to tie it at 13-13. A Broekhuis ace serve gave the Defenders their last lead of the game as Midland scored the next five points for a 20-16 lead. Dordt cut the lead down to 21-19 but the Warriors won it 25-20, getting the final point on a Katie Thomas kill.
Dordt bounced back with a win in set two when they vaulted to a 20-12 lead. Midland was able to narrow the gap to 23-21 but a kill by Katelyn Schuller finished the set at 25-21.
With the match reduced to a best of three affair, the Warriors moved to within a set of clinching it with a 25-21 win in set three. The contest featured eight ties through 8-8 as neither team could string together points. Midland got out to a 12-8 lead and never looked back in winning 25-21.
Similar to their situation on Wednesday against Morningside, the Defenders responded with a 25-21 win in set four. The Defenders trailed early at 6-3 but tied it at 9-9. The teams volleyed back in forth to 17-17 when Dordt was finally able to put three points in a row together. Kayla Gesink had a kill, Midland had a hitting error and Schuller finished the three point run with a kill. Midland got as close as 22-20 but a service error finished it with Dordt winning 25-21.
The deciding set was decided early with Dordt running out to a 12-3 lead. Dordt sophomore Kayla Broekhuis served for six points, getting three aces during the run. Midland made one charge to cut the lead to 13-10 but two straight attack errors by the Warriors ended the set and match with a Dordt 15-10 win.
Dordt was led by Danae Geels with 12 kills and Lindsey Floen had 10 kills and was in on 10 blocks. Katelyn Schuller recorded nine kills and Kayla Gesink had 40 assists with 17 digs. Kayla Broekhuis had a team high 23 digs with six ace serves and Jana Van Zanten had 11 digs and two ace serves.
Midland was led by Heather Prybl with 14 digs and Molly Pettit had 16 digs.
Dordt is now second in league play, trailing Hastings who is 7-0.
Dordt will face Briar Cliff on Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym in GPAC play.
