November 8, 2011

(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College volleyball season came to and end on Tuesday night, November 8 in Orange City with a Great Plains Athletic Conference Quarterfinal round loss to Northwestern 3-0.

Dordt seized the early lead in set one 5-0 but the Raiders fought back to eventually tie it at 13-13 on a Kate Boersma kill. The Raiders scored six of seven points at one point to take a 17-14 lead and fought the Defenders off when the visitors cut the gap to 22-20 on a block. Three straight points gave Northwestern a 25-20 win in set one.

Set two had Northwestern getting up 4-0 only to have the Defenders cut the lead down and eventually tied it at 14-14 with Kiley Velgersdyk knotting it on a kill. A Dordt block pushed the difference to 15-14 for the Defenders and the set was tied again at 16, 17, 21, 22 and 23 but Northwestern scored the final three points of the set and they took the set 25-23.

Northwestern used a run of six out of seven points push the difference from 12-8 to an insurmountable 17-9 difference and rode that advantage to a 25-14 win.

"We weren't able to block consistently. We did have some good blocking and I don't want to take away from that but we weren't able to get enough from the blocking," said Dordt coach Chad Hanson. "We had great intensity to start the match."
