Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Playing in front of a near capacity crowd at the De Witt Gym, the Dordt College Defenders did their part in tightening up the Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball race with a 3-1 match win over the Hastings College Broncos on Saturday afternoon. The match was a part of Dordt's Parents Weekend activities and triggered a tie in the loss column for second place with five teams having four losses and the leader in the league has three.
Dordt won the first two sets in come from behind fashion, stunning the visitors with a pair of late comebacks for wins of 25-21 and 25-23.
The Broncos won set three by a convincing 25-15 margin but were unable to maintain the momentum in falling 25-22 in set four with Dordt leading most of the way, not needing the late set heroics in what turned out to be the decisive set.
"This is a match tat showed two tough teams in conference playing for a top spot in the GPAC. It really is gratifying to see the product of this win," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "That product was the commitment that our studen athletes put into the daily improvement of their individual and team skills each day in our training gym We grew a ton this week."
Dordt got 13 kills from outside hitter Katelyn Schuller while Danae Geels had 12 kills against four errors. Lindsey Moerman put down ten kills and had a solo block with four assisted blocks. April Solsma and Kiley Velgersdyk each had seven kills as Dordt improved to 7-4 in the league with five matches to go over the next two weeks.
Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink had 28 and 21 assists respectively and each hit double figures in digs with 11 and 15 each.
"Jessica and Kayla set a wonderful match and really provided solid leadership for us offensively," said Hanson. "They were consistently able to get in a rhythm due to our first touch ball contacts that Jocelyn, Amber and Jana provided."
Gesink's 15 digs were team honors with Jocelyn Bousema getting 14 with two service aces. Amber Weingartner also had 14 digs and had a service ace.
Hastings got 11 kills from Kendra Schwein and Haley Beardsley had 41 assists. Hastings is now 7-4 in the conference and 16-11 overall while Dordt is back to within a match of .500 overall at 13-14 and stand 7-4 in the GPAC as well. Dordt will travel to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night in its next action.
