Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Northwestern
September 27, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders prevailed in five sets over the Northwestern Red Raiders in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball on Tuesday, September 27 in a match played at the De Witt Gym. The two teams battled for over two hours before Dordt won the match by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12.
Dordt never trailed in set one, holding off a Northwestern rally that cut the Dordt lead from 16-10 down to 19-17. Dordt got back to back points off an attack error and a service ace by Amber Weingartner for some breathing room and went on to win 25-18.
Set two belonged to Northwestern with the Raiders never giving up the lead after scoring the first four points of the set. The Defenders made a run to cut the gap to 19-18 when Katelyn Schuller had a kill and Jocelyn Bousema an ace serve to cut the advantage down. Northwestern responded with a Jennie Jansen kill and Dordt couldn't mount another charge, falling 25-20.
Set three was Dordt's almost from the outset. The Defenders grabbed the early lead at 7-2 with four different Dordt players recording kills. Northwestern rallied and had the lead trimmed to one on several occasions, the last time at 20-19 but a Schuller kill along with a Moerman kill gave the Defenders some breathing room and Geels won it for Dordt with a kill for a 25-21 win.
Set four had Northwestern grabbing the momentum back with Dordt unable to overcome an early deficit. The visitors forced the decisive fifth set with a convincing 25-18 win.
The fourth set momentum carried over into the fifth when Northwestern seized an 8-5 advantage after a Dordt attack error. Dordt regrouped and tied it at eight on kills by Geels, Solsma and Griess. A Velgersdyk kill gave Dordt the lead and the score was tied again at 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11. Dordt got back to back points on a Schuller kill and a Northwestern attack error and then got to set point on a kill by Geels. After a Northwestern point to stop the string and make it 14-12 the Defenders won it on a kill by Schuller to cap a 20 kill night.
Schuller led all players with 20 kills while Kiley Velgersdyk had 13 and Danae Geels 11. Kayla Gesink set up 27 kills with assists and Jessica De Stigter assisted on 24. Jocelyn Bousema led four players in double figures for kills with 17.
"We did a great job of distributing the ball and our setters did a good job going to our outside pins," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "Katelyn Schuller and Kiley Velgersdyk kept pressure on Northwestern by forcing the ball into their perimeter defense."
Northwestern's top player at the net was Jennie Jansen with 14 and Megan Hutson and Rylee Hulstein had nine each. Kaitlin Floechinger put up 37 assists.
Dordt is now 9-11 overall and 4-1 in the conference while Northwestern is 2-2 and 9-12 overall. Dordt will play Doane this weekend in Crete, Nebraska.
