Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Baker
September 2, 2011
The Dordt College Defender volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision to Baker (Kansas) on Friday, September 2 at a classic hosted by Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. Dordt dropped a 25-14, 24-26, 25-16, 25-13 decision and fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Dordt fell behind from the start in set one, trailing 7-6 early. The Wildcats scored scored four in a row from there to take control and won 25-14. Set two was tight through out with Dordt leading 24-23 after a block by Lindsey Moerman. A Baker kill tied it and an attack error by the Defenders gave the Wildats the lead and they won it on a block 26-24.
Set three belonged to Dordt with the Defenders running away 25-14. Dordt led the fourth set at 6-5 but allowed eight points in a row for a 13-6 advantage and the Defenders never made a serious dent in the advantage for a 25-13 final.
Dordt's Katelyn Schuller had 11 kills while Jana Van Zanten had seven with 14 digs. Danae Geels and Lindsey Moerman each had six kills. Kayla Gesink had 18 assists and Jessica De Stigter 17. Jasmyn Turner had 13 kills for the Wildcats as they improved to 2-3.
"Ouch!!!" commented Dordt College coach Chad Hanson at the conclusion of the match. "Not for the loss but for the way we didn't play. We are learning that a quiet and hesitant pursuit will often result in an undesirable outcome. We will definitely need to bring the right focus to our evening match versus Lewis Clark State."
The Defenders will face Lewis Clark this evening and will play Viterbo (Wisconsin) and Benedictine (Kansas) on Saturday.
