Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Lewis-Clark State
September 2, 2011
(Bellevue, Nebraska) The Dordt College volleyball team lost to a highly regarded Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) team on Friday at the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Nebraska. Dordt lost 18-25, 16-25, 29-27 and 16-25 to drop to 2-4 for the season.
Dordt surrendered a string of points near the mid point of the first set that saw them fall from 12-11 down to 18-12 and the Defenders never got closer than four in losing 25-18.
Set two saw Lewis-Clark get out quickly to a 12-2 lead and they rode that momentum to a 25-16 win. Dordt was on the brink of a 3-0 loss in set three, trailing 24-21, but managed to recover with Katelynn Schuller and Loy Griess combining for a block and point to tie it at 24-24. A block by the same two players got Dordt to set point but they couldn't finish the set off until Kayla Gesink delivered an ace serve for the 29-27 win.
Dordt couldn't carry the momentum into set four as Lewis-Clark seized the early lead and kept the Defenders at bay the rest of the contest and won 25-16.
"We came out from the first serve with a wonderful focus of treating each point like it matters," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "That focused carried forward into our next match will be exactly what we need to continue maturing as a team."
Danae Geels led the Defenders with ten kills while Lindsey Moerman and Katelyn Schuller each had nine kills. Jessica De Stigter put up 20 assists and Kayla Gesink had 16 while serving one ace. Jocelyn Bousema led the diggers with 12.
Lewis-Clark's Kelli Tikker had 18 kills to lead all players.
Dordt will face Viterbo (Wisconsin) and Benedictine (Kansas) on Saturday to complete play at the two-day event.
