Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Northwestern

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Northwestern turned in a 3-2 win over the Dordt Defenders in a clash of Great Plains Athletic Conference perennial powers on Wednesday night in Sioux Center. Northwestern won sets one and two by scores of 25-19 and 25-22 with Dordt forcing a stalemate with wins of 25-18 and 25-23 in sets three and four. Set five swung to Northwestern 15-12.
Northwestern led start to finish in set one with Dordt cutting a 13-6 lead to 18-15 on a Brittany Landegent kill. Four straight points by Northwestern--three of them ace serves by Heather Goehring, allowed Northwestern a cushion and they won 25-19 on a Dordt net violation.
Set saw Dordt in front early, holding a 15-10 lead after Kiley Velgersdyk put a kill down. Northwestern eventually tied it at 17 on another Goehring ace and the teams were tied at 18, 19, 20 and 21 with Northwestern taking the lead for good on a Hillary Hanno kill. Northwestern eventually won it on a Bobbi Jean Rich kill for a 25-22 win.
Backed into a corner the Defenders came back with their strongest performance of the night, taking a 7-2 lead out of the chute and clung to a 13-11 lead later in the set. Dordt never relinquished the lead and won it on a Velgersdyk kill 25-18. Set four featured five ties up to 9-9 before Dordt put together a run that had them scoring six of seven points with Danae Geels landing two kills. Northwestern charged back to with one on three different occasions, the last time at 24-23 but a Northwestern hitting error forced set five.
Dordt tied the set for the last time at 8-8 on a Lindsey Moerman kill but Northwestern scored four in a row to take control. Dordt did cut the difference to 13-12 on a Jana Van Zanten kill but Northwestern responded with a Hillary Hanno kill and won it on a block.
Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter with 17 kills and Danae Geels had nine with Kiley Velgersdyk adding seven. Bekah Posthuma put up 19 assists and Jessica De Stigter had 17. Dorinda Hibma had a team high 37 digs and three ace serves. Potgeter was in on 11 block assists and Brittany Landegent had one solo block and nine assists.
Northwestern got 20 kills from Hanno while Jenni Jansen and Kate Buyert each had 11. Beaver put 50 assists up and Rylee Hulstein had 18 digs and eight kills.
Northwestern improves to 30-0 overall and 14-0 in the GPAC while Dordt slips to 29-6 overall and 10-4 in the conference. Dordt travels to Doane on Saturday while Northwestern is at Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday afternoon."The result certainly wasn't what we hoped for," said Dordt Head Coach Tom Van Den Bosch, "but our effort tonight was great and I am extremly proud of how we competed."
