Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

(Sioux Center, Iowa) A match of #19 ranked opponents lived up to billing Friday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa, with the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves prevailing over the Defenders in five sets in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. The Defenders battled after losing one of their setters to injury in set four but couldn't overcome the NCAA Division III foe. Dordt entered the match ranked in the NAIA and the Lincoln, Nebraska based school was also #19 in their poll this week. Wesleyan won set one 25-22 with Dordt winning sets two and three by scores of 25-23 and 25-19. The Prairie Wolves won set four 25-19 and prevailed in the decisive fifth set, fighting off four Dordt College match points to win 19-17.

The two teams battled through nine ties in set one with the final dead lock coming at 17-17 when Brittany Landegent evened it for Dordt with a kill. Back to back kills by Zoie Smetter and Hannah Behrens for Wesleyan gave them a two point lead and they held the Defenders off the rest of the way. Dordt got as close as 22-21 on back to back kills by Kendra Potgeter but they weren't enough as the hosts tripped 25-22.

Set two had Dordt in front from the start with Wesleyan challenging in the final stretch. Dordt led 18-14 but the visitors chipped away and eventually tied the set on a hitting error at 22-22. Dordt got a kill from Kendra Potgeter to take the lead back and eventually won 25-23 on a Landegent kill. Set three had Dordt in front early again, rolling to a 13-8 advantage before four straight points by the Prairie Wolves got them back in contention at 13-12 with Elman getting the kill to get them close. The two teams traded points up to 18-17 when Wesleyan was finally able to tie it on a Brammeier kill. Jana Van Zanten was equal to the task for Dordt with a kill that gave the Defenders the lead and back to back hitting errors by the Prairie Wolves after a timeout got Dordt up 22-18. Wesleyan couldn't get the momentum back and lost 25-19 with Dordt's final two points coming on blocks.

Set four swung to Wesleyan when one of Dordt's setters, Bekah Posthuma, went down with an injury with Dordt up 7-2. Wesleyan seized the momentum with Dordt out of sorts and took the lead at 8-7 on six straight points--four of the points came on hitting errors or ball handling errors by the Defenders. Dordt did battle and fought to seven more ties, the last one at 19-19 on a Danae Geels kill. Brittnie Kreikemeier caught fire after that for the Prairie Wolves and had five of the last seven points for Wesleyan on kills for a 25-19 win.

Set five started with Wesleyan rolling up an 8-2 lead. Dordt responded with an eight point run of their own to go up 10-8. The teams were tied at 10, 11, 12 and 13 with Dordt taking a 14-13 lead on a block. A Krikemeier kill evened it for Wesleyan but a Geels kill gave Dordt another match point serve. A Dordt hitting error knotted it at 15 but Landegent gave Dordt another chance at the win with a kill. After a net violation on Dordt Kendra Potgeter came through with a kill for a 17-16 lead. A kill by Elman evened it and a hitting error by Dordt gave the Prairie Wolves the lead at 18-17. Wesleyan won it on a Denae Becker kill on the next point.

Dordt was led by Potgeter's 24 kills. Geels had ten kills and Posthuma put up 28 assists and De Stigter 18. Carrie Vande Kamp put up six assists in relief of Posthuma. Dorinda Hibma had 32 digs and Jocelyn Bousema got to 22. Wesleyan was led by Brammeier and Elman with 14 and 13 kills each and Caitlin Anderson put up 46 assists. Erika Goldsmith had a team high 30 digs. Each team recorded just one ace serve.

Dordt falls to 22-5 overall and 4-3 in the league while Wesleyan improves to 6-1 in the GPAC and 17-2 overall. Dordt will host Morningside on Saturday night in GPAC action at 7:30 while Nebraska Wesleyan travels to Dakota Wesleyan for a Saturday match.
