Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Hastings-GPAC Tournament Quarterfinals

November 7, 2009

(Hastings, Nebraska) The Dordt women's volleyball team advanced to the GPAC semi-finals on Wednesday, November 11 after defeating the Hastings Broncos 3-1 this evening in a quarter-final match up. The win avenged a regular season loss by the Defenders to the Broncos in early October and allows the Defenders a rematch with the Northwestern Red Raiders in Orange City on Wednesday night.

Dordt started slowly and trailed 5-1 before bouncing back to tie it at 6-6 on a block. Ties ensued at seven and eight before the Defenders got in front 14-8. The Broncos came storming back to eventually tie it at 19-19 and it was tied again at 20 and 21. Three points in a row by the Broncos got Hastings to set point up 24-21. Steph Fykstra broke their service with a power tip and back to back blocks tied it at 24-24. At that point the Broncos self destructed with two hitting errors and the Defenders snuck the win out at 26-24.

Set two fouled the same pattern with Dordt falling being early but tying the score at 5-5. Hastings looked poised to pull even at 1-1 in sets with a 24-22 lead with four straight points but the Defenders fought back to even at 24-24 and it was tied at 25 and 26. Dordt got the go ahead point on a Jana Van Zanten kill and Brandee Schaap finished the set with a service ace.

Facing elimination, the Broncos fought back to win set three with six straight points to close the set and win 25-18.

Set four was close to a 15-12 advantage for Dordt with the Broncos struggling from that point on. A service error by the Broncos gave the Defenders a 16-12 lead and three straight hitting errors by the hosts pushed Dordt up 19-12. A passing error completed the string of five straight Dordt points off Hastings' errors and Kendra Potgeter put the set and match away, scoring three of the final four set points on kills.

Dordt was led by Potgeter's 14 kills and Danae Geels had 11. Brittany Landegent had seven kills and Jana Van Zanten had seven to go with 11 digs. Jessica De Stigter put up 19 assists and Cassie Huizenga had 15 assists. Dorinda Hibma got to 35 digs and Brandee Schaap had 10 to go with two ace serves.

Hastings got 12 kills out of Leah Dostal and 11 kills from Kendra Schwien. Haley Beardsley was tops on the team with 42 assists.

Dordt will now face Northwestern in a semifinal match on Wednesday at 7:30 while Doane travels to Morningside in the other semifinal match. Dordt is 26-11 while Hastings falls to 27-9 to conclude their season.
