Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

October 24, 2009

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team suffered their second loss in as many nights in Sioux City, dropping a 3-1 decision at Briar Cliff one night after suffering the same fate at Morningside.

Dordt used a run midway through the first set to take a 16-10 lead and then held on for a 25-21 decision with Danae Geels hitting the game winner.

Sets two and three were near copies of each other with Briar Cliff getting early leads and holding several Dordt College charges off to win 25-18 and 25-22. Briar Cliff pushed in front 7-2 in set two with Dordt trimming the lead back to three at 16-13 on a Briar Cliff serving error, hitting error and block. Dordt got no closer than that three point difference before falling. Set three had the Chargers pull away from a 6-6 tie to take a commanding 14-8 lead on a pair of blocks. A Dordt hitting error and service error widened the gap even further to 17-9 before the Defenders put together a frantic comeback to get the difference to 23-20 on a Kendra Potgeter kill. Dordt didn't have enough left though in losing 25-22.

Set four was the best set of the night with a total of 10 ties. Dordt took their first two point lead of the set at 21-19 when a Betsy Van't Hul kill coupled with a Briar Cliff hitting error put the Defenders in control. Dordt was still up 22-20 when Briar Cliff scored three in a row. A Brittany Landegent kill tied it and Dordt was up 24-23 after a Charger hitting error. The Defenders couldn't get the set point though with a Geri Heiman kill dropping in and Dordt committed a hitting error to put Briar Cliff up 25-24. Another Landegent kill tied it but a Briar Cliff tip found the back line and a Rikole Santin ace won it for the Chargers.

Dordt was led by Danae Geels' 16 kills and Kendra Potgeter had 14. Jana Van Zanten had 13 kills and Dorinda Hibma 36 digs. Jessica De Stigter got to 16 digs and put up 27 assists.

Briar Cliff was led by Alex Anstine's 17 kills and Nicole Hoogeveen had 10. Anstine also had 20 digs.

Dordt is now 22-10 this season and 9-4 in the conference while Briar Cliff improves to 15-15 overall and 8-6 in the league.

Dordt will travel to Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 27 in their next outing before returning home for a pair of matches on October 30 and 31.
