Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. South Dakota

(Vermillion, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders battled the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota on Tuesday night, October 20 and came away with a 3-1 loss. The Defenders had the NCAA Division I member on the ropes in set three before letting the set slip away and lost in the ensuing set.

Set one was tied ten times, the last time at 20-20 when Dordt scored two points in a row to knot it. The Coyotes scored the next four points and held the Defenders off 25-22. Set two had five early ties and the hosts looked poised to pull away with a 13-9 lead on five straight points. A service error by the Coyotes broke the strink and the Defenders eventually tied it at 14 and it was knotted again at 17-17 with Brittany Landegent smashing a kill. The two teams exchanged points with the Coyotes scoring three in a row at one point for a 20-18 lead and they were up 23-20 before Dordt staged a comeback on a Cassie Huizenga dump shot and a block by Kendra Potgeter block. Despite that, the Coyotes were serving for set point at 24-22 and failed to convert. Three straight points by the Defenders--two on kills by Potgeter got Dordt in front and the Defenders eventually won it 28-26.

Set three was a role reversal with Dordt leading the all the way to 24-22 at which point the Coyotes scored tow in a row for a tie and withstood set point serves by Dordt at 25-24 and 26-25 to scored three points in a row at the end for a 28-26 and they took the momentum into set four. Leading almost from the outset, the Coyotes took a 10-4 lead, held off a Dordt run to 10-8 and rolled to a 25-17 win.

Dordt was topped by Kendra Potgeter's 12 kills while Jana Van Zanten had eight kills and 21 digs and Brittany Landegent had eight kills and 16 digs. Danae Geels accounted for seven kills and Dorinda Hibma had a team high 31 digs. Cassie Huizenga and Jessica De Stigter each had 18 assists and Potgeter was in on seven assisted blocks.

The University of South Dakota was led by Kimberlee Bulaga with 19 kills and Kristen Kritenbrink had 12 kills and Tahnee Reed accounted for 11 kills with Gina Baldwin putting up 42 assists.

Dordt is 22-8 while the Coyotes are 9-12. Dordt will travel to Morningside on Friday and Briar Cliff on Saturday, October 24.
