Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Mount Marty
October 31, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team was able to survive their second Friday night scare in a row with a 3-2 win over the Mount Marty Lancers in a the regular season home finale for the Defenders at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders had to come back from a 2-1 set deficit to score the win and give the Defenders their 30th win of the season.
Dordt led set one 9-7 when Kelsey Van Dyke went down with an ankle injury that prevented her from returning the rest of the match. Dordt went on to win set one by a 25-15 margin, pulling away from a 15-14 scored with eight straight points for a 23-15 advantage, getting three kills from Larissa Veldhuizen at the end of the run to take control of the set with Dorinda Hibma serving.
Dordt never got on track early in set two, trailing 18-12 before staging a comeback that had them tie the set at 20-20 when a Mount Marty attack hit the antenae. Three more points on combination a Veldhuizen-Potgeter block and a pair of Potgeter kills seemingly gave Dordt the momentum and a 23-20 lead. Mount Marty came roaring back, though, to score the final five points of the set and send Dordt reeling.
The two teams were tight in set three with ten ties up to a 17-17 score when Mount Marty pulled away slightly. Dordt did tie it at 22-22 again on a Potgeter block but Mount Marty's Emily Rasmussen knocked down a pair of kills and a hitting error by the Defenders forced Dordt into a 2-1 deficit.
Ties ensued in set four at every point from one to four with Dordt pulling away to an 11-8 margin. Dorinda Hibma served the next eight points, including three ace serves and the Defenders had control of set four at 19-8 and rolled to a 25-9 win with Betsy Van't Hul getting the game winner.
