Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Dana
October 24, 2008
(Blair, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team survived an upset bid by the Dana Vikings in Great Plains Athletic Conference play Friday night, October 24 at the Gardner-Hawks Arena in Blair, Nebraska.
The Defenders took set one convincingly 25-15 and seemed on their way with a 22-16 lead in set two. Dana called a timeout and proceeded to score five points in a row to cut the lead to 22-21. A Larissa Veldhuizen kill seemed to right the ship but the Vikings kept charging, eventually tying the set on a hitting error at 24-24. Despite that, Dordt fought off a set point serve and took the lead on a Kelsey Van Dyke kill to lead 27-26. Dordt served for the win at 28-27 and was unable to close the deal and Dana won 31-29 with Megan Higgins getting hot in the process.
Dana dominated set three with Dordt reeling to a 21-15 deficit. Dordt did cut the lead to 22-20 but it was too late with the Vikings holding on for the 25-22 win.
Set four featured six ties to 11-11 with Dordt taking the lead for good on an April Solsma kill. Dordt built the lead to 20-15 and held on for the win with Kendra Potgeter getting back to back kills to make it 24-18 and a Dana hitting error evened the match at 2-2.
Set five had Dordt use the momentum they had built in set four to get an early lead and with several digs by Jessica De Stigter, were able to neutralize Higgins and go on to win 15-5.
The Defenders were led by Kendra Potgeter's 22 kills while Kristin De Ronde added 12. Van Dyke and Veldhuizen had 11 kills each. Dorinda Hibma led Dordt with 29 digs and Van Dyke had 19 anbd De Stigter 11. Dordt's Cassie Huizenga had 31 assists and DeStigter 29. Dordt had five ace serves in the win, their 27th of the season against five losses.
Dana falls to 14-16 with the loss and 4-8 in the conference. The Vikings were topped by Higgins with 13 kills and Kali Brayfield with 10.
