Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. College of St. Mary

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team ran their record to 24-5 with a 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 win over the College of Saint Mary (Nebraska) Flames, Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders started fast with a 6-1 advantage in set one with Kelsey Van Dyke getting two early kills in the run as the Flames failed to get in system and had several passing errors close to the net. The Flames cut the lead to two and were down 12-8 when the Defenders ran off six points in a row, the final two points in the run coming when Kendra Potgeter put away a couple of Flame over passes. Dordt went on to win the set 25-17, capping the win with a Potgeter block.
Set two was by far the most competitive with the Flames taking the lead from a 10-10 tie and built it to 14-11 before dordt came back on a kill by April Solsma and a block by Pogeter. Dordt eventually tied it iwth a kill by Kristin De Ronde at 16-16 and the teams were still even at 21-21. Dordt got up 24-22 when the Veronica Barrientos was called for a net violation but after a College of Saint Mary timeout the Flames got a point back on a Barrientos block and tied it at 24-24. From there the Defenders set the ball to Potgeter for the lead and got the win on a College of Saint Mary hitting error.
Set three featured 10 ties, the last at 18-18. From there Dordt went on a run of six points in a row to lead 24-18 and scored the game winner on a College of Saint Mary hitting error.
Dordt was led by Kelsey Van Dyke and Kendra Potgeter with 12 kills each while De Ronde had six. Solsma, Betsy Van't Hul and Larissa Veldhuizen all had four kills and Dorinda Hibma had 11 digs to lead Dordt and she had two ace serves to lift her season total to 40. Jessica De Stigter put up 18 assists and Cassie Huizenga had 15. Amber Weingartner had two ace serves and joined De Stigter and Huizenga with eight digs each.
Dordt scored 11 points off of blocks with Potgeter getting credit for three solos and four assists and Kristin De Ronde had three block assists as did Kelsey Van Dyke. Solsma also had one solo and a pair of assists.
Dordt is now 24-5 and will face Briar Cliff on Saturday night in a 7:30 varsity match preceded by a junior varsity match at 6:00. The win was Coach Tom Van Den Bosch's 398th on the Dordt bench. Earlier in the day Dordt dropped to #16 in the country in the NAIA coaches' poll after spending last week at #12.
