Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders recovered from a sluggish start to drop the Briar Cliff Chargers in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball play on Wednesday at the Newman Flanagan Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Defenders faded in set one after leading early by a 7-4 margin. Briar Cliff took the lead for good with six out of seven points to make it 10-8 and the Chargers withstood the Defender run that cut the lead to 16-15 in taking the set 25-20. Set two featured several ties early with the teams battling to a 14-14 deadlock, the ninth tie of the set. Dordt scored three in a row to take control and pushed the lead to 21-16 before winning 25-19.
Set three was the only match that a team controlled from start to finish with Dordt rolling 25-17. Briar Cliff took the momentum back in set four and built a 14-8 lead before the Defenders scratched away at the lead, finally tying it at 18, and, after ties at 18, 19, 20 and 21, the Defenders scored the final four points of the set and match for a 25-21 win.
The Defenders were led by Kendra Potgeter's 16 kills and April Solsma recorded 13. Kristin De Ronde added seven kills and Kelsey Van Dyke and Brandee Schaap each had six.
Jessica De Stigter had 24 assists and eight digs while Cassie Huizenga put up 22 assists with six digs. Dordt was led by De Ronde with six assisted blocks while Potgeter and Van Dyke both had five. April Solsma was credited with a solo block and four assists and Dorinda Hibma was the leader off the net with 26 digs--tops for the match.
Briar Cliff, falling to 12-6, was led by Alex Anstine with 12 kills and Geri Heimann had ten. Kayla Bessmer topped them with 26 assists and Anstine had a tema high 21 digs.
Dordt is 17-2 and 3-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference while Briar cliff is 2-2 in the league and 12-6 overall.
Dordt will face Kansas Wesleyan on Friday and Columbia (#6) and Bellevue (#7) on Saturday at a tournament hosted by Bellevue University at Bellevue, Nebraska.
