Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team handed Briar Cliff their second conference loss of the 2007 season with a 3-1 win in the De Witt Gym on Saturday night, October 13 to improve to 6-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
The Defenders led game one from start to finish for a 30-20 win and were up 14-10 in game two before the Chargers scored eight in a row to turn the momentum in their favor. The Chargers rode that eight point run to the win, holding off several Dordt charges, the last coming when they were up 28-23 and Dordt trimmed it down to 28-25 before the Chargers clipped off the final two points.
The two teams played to four ties early in game three, the last at 7-7 with the Defenders pulling away to a 14-8 advantage. Briar Cliff did get back to within 20-19 only to have Dordt College pull away late in game three for a 30-25 win after Briar Cliff had cut the lead to 28-25.
The GPAC foes looked destined for a decisive game five when Briar Cliff took a 26-20 lead but the Defenders dug in and scored four points in a row for a 26-24 difference. After a Briar Cliff point the Defenders reeled off four points in a row to take the lead at 28-27. The score was tied again at 28 and 29 before the Defenders served for the game and match and came away with a 31-29 win.
Dordt was led by Kristin De Ronde's 19 kills and Autumn Vande Kamp's 17. Kendra Potgeter had 16 and Larissa Veldhuizen 16 for the Defenders while Emily Van Voorst put up 59 assists and two ace serves with 16 digs. Potgeter was in on seven block assists while Dorinda Hibma led the team with 41 digs and also had an ace serve.
Briar Cliff was Alex Anstine wtih 16 kills and Nicole Hoogeveen had 14. Nicolle Donovan put up 44 assists in the loss and Anstine had a team high 30 digs.
Dordt is now 25-6 overall and 6-4 in the league while Briar Cliff slides to 18-7 and 8-2 in the GPAC. Dordt travels to Sioux Falls on Wednesday, October 17 in their next action.
