Dordt College Volleyball vs. Doane

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College played near flawless offensive volleyball in sets one and two and earned a three set win over the Doane Tigers on Saturday evening at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders ran away with wins of 25-11 and 25-14 before battling 25-20 in set three to improve to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in GPAC play. The win marks the midpoint of the GPAC season for the Defenders.
Dordt never trailed in sets one and two as they were able to set the tone early.
Dordt got out to a 3-0 lead in set one before Doane scored back to back points. A four point run by the Defenders with Jenna Horstman getting back to back kills in the run put the Defenders up 7-2. The two teams traded points with the Defenders forcing Doane to use its first time out. Doane responded with a two point string to narrow it to 8-5 but four points in a row made it 12-5 for Dordt. A three point run by the Defenders got them up 15-6 after Doane had forced sideout. By the time it was 20-11 Dordt had scored seven points in a row on Doane miscues. The Defenders scored the last five points of the set, getting two points off kills by Horstman and two more points on blocks for a 25-11 win.
Set two was more of the same as Dordt pulled away from a 3-2 advantage to get up 7-2 as back to back attack errors after a Doane timeout added to the string. Eventually leading 10-4, the Defenders scored a point an a ball handling error, two blocks and a Doane attack error. Doane got no closer than eight in falling 25-15 with Kayla Gesink getting a kill to finish the set.
Set three was easily the most competitive with the two teams tying at every point up till 13-13. A Meghan Krausman kill followed by a block and Dordtís only ace serve of the night, a serve by Kayla Broekhuis gave the Defenders a 16-13 lead. An Emily Max kill broke the run but Krausman knocked another one down and Doane had back to back attack errors around a timeout call and Dordt had the cushion they needed at 19-14.
Dordt had to withstand a run by the visitors as they gave up three points in a row to lead 22-19 but a service error by Doane followed by a Doane block made it 23-20. Another Doane service error, the Tigersí ninth of the game got the Defenders to match point and Dordt won set three 25-20.
Dordt didnít have an attack error in set one or two as they hit over .520 in both sets. Dordt committed just five attack errors and had six service errors in the game with 59 digs. Doane had 15 attack errors and nine service errors in the loss.
The Defenders were led by Jenna Horstman with 14 kills and Brooke Wolterstorff had eight with Elizabeth Kiel getting six. Kayla Gesink put up 28 assists and had four kills. Kayla Broekhuis got to 19 digs.
Doane was led by Ashley Axman with 11 kills and Haley Norvell put up 16 assists. Karissa Blank got to 11 digs.
Dordt is now 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the league and will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night. Doane falls to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
