Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) Dordt College used a late run to win its GPAC opener with Briar Cliff on Wednesday night in Sioux City. The Defenders upped their record to 7-2 with the win while dropping Briar Cliff to 3-4 and handing the Chargers their fourth loss in succession.
Dordt opened the match with a 25-18 in set one, pulling away from a 8-7 advantage with seven points in a row, capping the run with back to back kills by Jenna Horstman.
Set two was all Dordt early as the Defenders built a 10-5 lead. Briar Cliff responded with seven point run to take a 12-0 lead. Dordt rallied to tie it at 12-12 and again at 17-17 and had a lead of 19-18 on a block, but the Chargers scored four in a row to take control and held off the Defenders for a 25-21 win.
Set three was all Briar Cliff early as they built a 7-2 advantage and were up 11-6 when Dordt used its second timeout. Dordt got no closer than three in dropping the 25-20 decision.
Set four was a tense battle with ties at 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 17 and 18. Back to back blocks put the Defenders up 20-18 and a Lindsey Floen kill extended the advantage to 21-18. Two points in a row from Briar Cliff made it 21-20 but a Briar Cliff service error out of a timeout gave Dordt a two point lead that the hosts couldn't dent as Dordt won 25-21.
Set five featured runs by both teams. Dordt got up 3-1 only to have Briar Cliff reel off four points in a row to lead 5-3. Dordt scored four of the next five for a 7-6 lead but it was Briar Cliff's turn for a run. Three points later the Chargers were up 9-7 and Dordt had to fight from behind. A Danae Geels kill tied it at 9-9 but the Chargers looked poised for the win as they established a 12-11 advantage. From there it was all Dordt. A Jenna Horstman kill tied it; a Megan Krausman kill gave the Defenders the lead; a block put Dordt at match point and an attack error by the Chargers gave Dordt the win.
Dordt was paced by Danae Geels and Loy Sahr with ten kills each. Jenna Horstman had eight and Lindsey Floen added eight. Kayla Gesink got credit for 38 assists with a team high 15 digs and she had an ace serve. Floen accounted for three solo and six assisted blocks. Jana Van Zanten had 12 digs while Kayla Broekhuis and Jocelyn Bousema each had 11. Broekhuis and Bousema each had two ace serves.
Kally Iedema had 14 kills for the hosts and Erin Frank put up 50 assists.
Dordt will play four matches at a classic hosted by Hastings this Friday and Saturday while Briar Cliff will travel to the Black Hills for three matches this weekend.
