(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team opened the 2012 season wtih a win over Valley City State (North Dakota) on day one of the Northwestern Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa.
The Friday, August 24 afternoon match had the Defenders in control most of the way with convincing wins of 25-14 and 25-17 in the first two sets. Set three was tighter with the Vikings making a late charge but the Defenders were more than up to the task with Kayla Gesink getting a late dump-shot to reestablish the Defender lead and Valley City also was done in by a late service error.
Gesink put up 21 assists in the win and had two ace serves with six digs. Katelyn Schuller accounted for ten kills at the net and Loy Sahr had six kills. Lindsey Floen was in on four block assists. Two other Defenders had two ace serves as Jocelyn Bousema and Jana Van Zanten each dropped in a pair. Van Zanten and Kayla Broekhuis were a combined 30-30 on serve receptions.
