November 1, 2011

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Morningside Mustangs turned away the Dordt College Defender volleyball team in GPAC volleyball action on Tuesday night, November 1 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders won set one but then lost the next three in falling two matches behind the conference leader with two matches to go in the regular season.

The Defenders played from behind early in set one but took a lead at 7-6 on a Morningside service error. The two teams traded points up to the 14-13 mark when the Defenders went on a run, scoring three points in a row and eventually got up 21-15 as Morningside struggled with its attack. Dordt finished the set off with four kills in a row from Danae Geels, Lindsey Moerman and Kiley Velgersdyk for the 25-16 win. Morningside committed ten hitting errors in the set.

Set two was all Dordt early with the Defenders getting up 6-2 but the Mustangs fought to stay close, eventually tying the set at 14-14 on a ball handling error by Loy Griess. The Defenders lost the lead at 16-15 and never regained the advantage, losing 25-19 on two kills by Briana Schauble and one kill by Maggie Vondrak.

Set three followed the same pattern with Dordt getting up early but relinquished the lead at the 20-19 point and lost 25-21. Set four featured eight ties, the last one at 19-19. Back to back points by the Mustangs gave them some breathing room and they went on to win 25-20.

Dordt was led by three players with nine kills each--Katelyn Schuller, Lindsey Moerman and Danae Geels. April Solsma accounted for eight kills and Kiley Velgersdyk six. Kayla Gesink and Jessica De Stigter had 18 and 17 assists respectively and Jocelyn Bousema got to ten digs.

Morningside took some critical points when they needed them and we didn't get them back," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "We have one day to put this match behind us and get ready for Northwestern on Thursday night."

Morningside was paced by Maggie Vondrak with 15 kills and Riley Callan had 14. Monica Iverson put up 51 assists and Darcy Christensen had 24 digs.

Dordt falls to 9-5 in the GPAC and 15-15 overall while Morningside is now 21-6 and 11-3 overall. The Defenders are scheduled to face Northwestern in Orange City on Thursday, November 3 and Nebraska Wesleyan at home on Saturday, November 5.
