Dordt College Volleyball vs. Concordia
October 29, 2011
(Seward, Nebraska) The Dordt College volleyball team recovered from a pair of losses in sets one and two on the road at Concordia to take a five set match win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, October 29 in Seward, Nebraska. The Defenders had to hold off one last charge by the Bulldogs to secure the win in the fifth set and moved above .500 for the season and kept pace in the GPAC race with three matches remaining.
Dordt dropped set one by a 25-21 score and also surrendered set two 25-18.
Facing the prospect of a sweep loss, the Defenders were able to swing their way to a win in set three by a convincing 25-16 margin and then took set four a nearly equal margin of 25-18.
With the momentum squarely behind them, the Defenders took the early lead in set five and were up 14-9 when Concordia scored four points in a row to get to within 14-13. A Danae Geels attack from the right side finished the set and the match, giving Dordt it's ninth win in 13 conference matches and kept them tied for third in the conference standings with Midland, one game out of first in the loss column.
"This match showed two halves of volleyball with Concordia definitely winning the first half," said Dordt College head coach Chad Hanson. "I am extremely pleased with the strong character that our Defenders demonstrated this afternoon. We continue to learn new things about ourselves."
Geels had 13 kills to pace the Defenders and Katelyn Schuller had 12 kills. Lindsey Moerman had ten kills and five block assists--sharing team honors in block assists with Geels. Loy Griess accounted for nine kills on 18 attempts with no errors. Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink had 23 and 20 assists respectively and Jocelyn Bousema had 16 digs and Gesink 12. Dordt got 11 points off of blocks and another five points from ace serves--two each by Gesink and Amber Weingartner and one by Kayla Broekhuis.
Dordt is 15-14 this season and 9-4 in the GPAC. Concordia is 11-18 overall and 4-10 in the league. Dordt will host Morningside on Tuesday night, November 1, in the first match of a three-match week to close the season.
"Our perseverance shown today is something we will need to take forward as a team into our next week of very challenging competition," said Hanson.
