October 18, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team recovered from a slow start to defeat the Mount Marty Lancers on Tuesday night in volleyball action at the De Witt Gym by a 3-0 count. Dordt won by set scores of 28-26, 25-15, 25-14.
The Defenders led set one 7-3 before allowing Mount Marty to go on a run and take a 10-8 lead. The Defenders called a timeout and seemed to have things pointed in the right direction when they reeled off five points in a row on kills by four different players. Mount Marty fought its way back to a 15-15 tie on a Katie Lambert tie and built a 20-17 lead.
Dordt battled to keep it close and tied wit at 22-22 with Kiley Velgersdyk and a hitting error tying it and a Lindsey Moerman kill put the Defenders up 23-22. The score was then tied at 23, 24, 25, and 26 before Dordt won it on a Katelyn Schuller and a Mount Marty attack error for a 28-26 win.
Set two had the Defenders in front from start to finish with four straight points ending it. Set three was tied at one all and again at two before Schuller, Geels and Griess combined for five straight kills and the Defenders were off to a 25-14 win, getting the final point on a Kayla Vander Stelt attack from the right side.
"It was good to see that consistent play from start to finish in sets two and three," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "That's been something we've been striving for in our two months together as a program."
Dordt was led by Lindsey Moerman with 10 kills while Katelyn Schuller added nine. Kayla Gesink and Jessica De Stigter had 18 and 17 kills each and Jocelyn Bousema had a team high 11 digs. Jana Van Zanten recorded three ace serves and Bousema had a pair.
Mount Marty was topped by Kate Lingscheit with ten kills and Carlie Lambert with nine.
Dordt is 6-4 in conference play and 12-14 overall while Mount Marty falls to 1-10 in league and 5-20 overall. The Defenders are scheduled to host Hastings on Saturday with the varsity contest starting at 3:00.
