Dordt College Volleyball vs. Morningside

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Morningside Mustangs survived scares by the Dordt Defenders in volleyball action in Sioux City, winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference match by a 3-0 count. Morningside took the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 35-33. The Mustangs were 25-17 winners in set three for their sixth win in the conference.
The first set featured eight ties up to the 12-12 mark. Dordt scored three points in a row for a 15-12 advantage on a kill by Lindsey Moerman and a pair of attack errors by Morningside. The hosts responded with a run of their own, scoring five points in a row for a 17-15 lead of their own.
A Danae Geels kill tied it for Dordt at 17-17 and was tied at every point through 24-24. The Defenders got a kill by Lindsey Moerman to take a 25-24 lead and were serving for the win but gave up a kill by Riley Callan and two ace serves to Maggie Vondrak for a 27-25 win.
Morningside appeared poised to take set two as they controlled the early action, getting up by a 7-1 margin. Dordt made several runs but the Mustangs had answers, building the lead back to 23-17 after Dordt had trimmed the difference to two points on several occasions. The Defenders managed to score seven points in a row with the three of those points coming from Katelyn Schuller kills. Leading 24-23 Dordt was serving for the win but a service error tied the set at 24-24. Dordt would have four more set point service opportunities as both teams struggled to put points together and the Mustangs eventually won the extended points set 35-33, getting their final two points on Dordt attack errors.
Set three belonged to Morningside as the Mustangs led start to finish on the way to a 25-17 win.
Dordt was led in kills by Schuller's ten and Geels added nine while Lindsey Moerman put down seven. Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink had 20 and 15 assists each and Jocelyn Bousema had 11 digs.
Morningside was paced by Kaeli Austin and Briana Schaeuble with 12 kills each and Monica Iverson put up 40 assists.
Dordt is now 9-13 overall and 4-3 in the league while Morningside is 16-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Dordt will host Midland on Saturday night in Sioux Center in a scheduled 6:00 start for varsity play.
