Dordt College Volleyball vs. MidAmerica Nazarene-Bellevue Classic

(Bellevue, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team was unable to pull out a win in their first match of the weekend at the Bellevue Premier Classic hosted by Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. The loss came at the hands of MidAmerica Nazarene by scores of 20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 13-15.
The Defenders trailed early in set one but cut the lead to 19-18 on a kill by Lindsey Moerman. The Pioneers proceeded to score the next four points and won the set 25-20.
Dordt pulled away from a 17-17 tie in set two on a pair of Jana Van Zanten kills and Dordt's lead was never less than two the rest of the set in winning 25-20.
Set three was never close with MidAmerica Nazarene dominating the contest for a 25-17 decision and Dordt returned the favor in set four with a 25-22 win. Set four was tied at 17-17 when Kiley Velgersdyk unlocked the stalemate with a kill.
Set five had the Defenders up 12-10 but Dordt surrendered four points in a row before falling 15-13.
The Defenders were led by April Solsma with 16 kills while Lindsey Moerman had 12. Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink had 33 and 21 assists respectively and Jocelyn Bousema had 11 digs. Kayla Broekhuis put four ace serves in for the Defenders.
Dordt slips to 7-10 with the loss.
"We played very hard through out the entire match," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "Aggressive serving continues to be a strong component for us. These matches allow us more learning moments about maintaining a point to point focus in every area of on-court responsibilities."
