Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders won their Great Plains Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday night, September 6 at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa over the Briar Cliff Chargers. The Defenders never trailed in the first two sets and won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-20.
Dordt started quickly with a 4-2 lead with three different players, Loy Griess, April Solsma and Katelyn Schuller registering kills. Briar Cliff cut the gap to 6-5 but Dordt built a three point lead and never saw that lead shrink beyond that point in taking a 25-17 win.
Set two again had the Defenders in front early, getting in front 7-2 on a Lindsey Moerman kill. Briar Cliff closed the gap but the Defenders were able to withstand the run, going from up 19-16, to winning the contest with six straight points, getting the last point on an ace serve by Kayla Gesink.
Set three had Briar Cliff in front early with a 2-0 advantage but the Defenders scored seven of the next eight points and were up 7-3. Briar Cliff again closed the gap, getting as close as 19-18 after an Erin Frank dump shot but a serving error broke the visitors' momentum and the Defenders went on to take the 25-20 decision.
Katelyn Schuller led the Defenders with 13 kills while Danae Geels had eight in 11 attempts with no errors. Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink each had 19 and 14 assists respectively and Jocelyn Bousema had 18 digs.
"We played with good energy through out the match," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson. "Briar Cliff made a run at us in set three and I was happy to see us push through that. I thorugh we played with a good tempo. I wondered how we would come back after playing well in our last match on Saturday at the Bellevue Tournament and we responded with a strong effort. The energy in the De Witt Gym was great from the fans and the team."
Dordt is 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the league while Briar Cliff falls to 0-10 overall and 0-1 in the GPAC. Dordt will now face four opponents in a classic hosted by Point Loma in San Diego, California.
