Dordt College Volleyball vs. Benedictine-Bellevue Classic

(Bellevue, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defenders earned their third win of the season and first of the weekend at the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic with a 3-1 win over Benedictine (Kansas) on Saturday afternoon, September 3.

Dordt built a 20-12 lead in set one and then withstood a run by the Ravens that cut the lead to 22-20. Dordt won the set on a Danae Geels kill for a final of 25-21. Set two had the Ravens in front 19-18 but the Defenders tied it at on a service error. The score was tied again at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 before Dordt scored back to back points on a Benedictine attack error and a Loy Griess kill for a 2-0 match lead.

Benedictine fought off the sweep with a 25-23 win but the Defenders controlled set four and won 25-20 with their lead never shrinking under three.

"This was a great team effort in execution. We rediscovered fun play. We played fun and relaxed and when we do that we have good results," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson.

Katelyn Schuller put down 13 kills and Kiley Velgersdyk registered seven kills. Jessica De Stigter and Kayla Gesink had 17 and 16 assists respectively. Jocelyn Bousema led the team with 11 digs and Amber Weingartner had nine.

Benedictine was topped by Katie O'Connor and Danielle Miller with 11 each.

Dordt is 3-5 heading into a GPAC contest on Tuesday night, September 6.
