Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) In a match that teetered back and forth, the Dordt Defenders held off an upset minded Briar Cliff team on Saturday night for a 3-2 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play at the DeWitt Gym.
Dordt won sets one and two 25-20, 26-24 but dropped sets three and four 25-21, 26-24. The comeback proved to be too much for the Chargers as they lost set five by a 15-6 mark with Dordt rolling to the win in the decisive set.
Dordt won set one after pulling away fronm a 12-12 tie with a kill by Kendra Potgeter and another by Brittany Landegent. The Defenders eventually won the set with three kills landed by Landegent.
Set two had Dordt in a 17-9 hole before coming all the way back to tie it at 21-21 on a Lindsey Moerman kill. Loy Griess knocked a kill down for a Dordt lead and the Defenders held off a set point serve after Brooke Maguire dropped in an ace for a24-23 Briar Cliff lead. Geels had the kill to tie it and back to back blocks by Dordt gave the Defenders the 26-24 lead and what seemed to be a commanding lead at 26-24.
Briar Cliff didn't fade, taking the early lead in set three and holding it until Dordt tied it 14-14. A sweep seemed in the making but the Chargers fought Dordt off and won the set 25-21. Set four had Dordt in front 17-11 after a Potgeter kill but the Chargers strung some points together and eventually tied it at 23-23 and won it on a Rikole Santin ace.
The Defenders didn't disappoint the senior night crowd in set five, building a commanding 10-5 lead and then going on to win 15-6, getting a block to finish the set and match.
Potgeter had 18 kills for Dordt while Geels had 12 and Landegent 10. Dorinda Hibma had 34 digs and Jessica DeStigter put up 27 assists with Bekah Posthuma registering 25. Moerman was good for one solo and eight assisted blocks and Landegent had a pair of solo blocks with five assisted.
Briar Cliff was led by Nicole Hoogeveen with 18 kills while Monica Boeding and Chahala Pace each had 14 kills. Erin Frank put up 49 assists in the losing effort while Liz Krog had 18 digs.
Dordt is now 28-5 and 9-3 in the GPAC. Briar Cliff is 5-7 and 17-13. Dordt will host Concordia on Monday night in GPAC action.
"Briar Cliff played extremely well," remarked Dordt Head Coach Tom Van Den Bosch, "they dug a lot of balls and played very smart. After losing the 3rd set we had to remind our ladies that we were still up 2-1 and the pressure was on them but they (BCU) were playing pretty loose. We did well to respond in set 5 to finish it off."
