Dordt College Volleyball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team had little trouble with Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. The Defenders trailed once in the match with that deficit coming when Dakota Wesleyan scored the first point of the first set. Dordt responded with a three point run to go up 3-1 and were never tied or trailed the rest of the way in taking the 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 decision.
Kendra Potgeter led the way with seven kills in set one, establishing the tone at the net with five block assists as well. The Defenders ripped off five out of six points to go from up 11-6 to a 16-7 lead in the initial set.
Set two had the Defenders run off six points in a row for a 9-2 lead only to have Wesleyan cut the gap to 12-9. A service error by the visitors ended their four point run and they were never closer than three with an eight point run putting it out of reach at 22-11. Dorinda Hibma had two of her match high five service aces during that run.
Wesleyan stayed in it in set three till about the same point before facing from a 13-9 deficit to a 20-11 margin. The Defenders ended the set with a service error point, a Jessica De Stigter ace serve, a Loy Griess kill and a back row attack against the Tigers.
Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter with ten kills on 14 attacks and Danae Geels, after a slow start, added eight kills on 13 attackes. Neither Potgeter or Geels had an error as Dordt hit .370 for the match. Hibma had five service aces with 20 digs and Jessica De Stigter had 14 assists with three aces. Carrie VandeKamp put 10 assists up while Dordt totaled ten ace serves.
Dakota Wesleyan was led by Ashley Kley with 11 kills and eight digs--both team highs. The Tigers drop to 8-19 overall and 3-10 in the league.
Dordt is now 7-3 in the league and 26-5 overall. Earlier in the day Dordt improved one spot in the NAIA poll by moving to #19. The Defenders will travel to Sioux Falls on Friday to face the Cougars. The match starts with a junior varsity contest at 6:00 and a varsity tilt at 7:30.
