Dordt College Volleyball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College improved to 5-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 23-5 overall with a 3-1 win over Morningside on Saturday night at Sioux Center. The Defenders bounced back from a disappointing five set loss the night before to take the win over the Mustangs by set scores of 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 25-19.

Dordt pulled away from an 11-11 tie in set one to take a 15-11 lead. The Defenders got a kill from Danae Geels to start the run that actually started with Dordt down 11-9. Morningside did trim the lead to 24-22 with three straight points at the end of the set but a Geels kill ended it. Dordt's last three points came on kills by Geels.

Set two was never close as Dordt got out to a 13-5 lead. Morningside got no closer than 20-14 with Dordt scoring the final five points of the set by three Morningside hitting errors and two net violations.

Set three had Morningside turn the tables as they controlled from start to finish. Dordt got now closer than four down the stretch with Erin Downey getting two straight kills to finish it.

Set four featured three ties--the last one at 9-9 but Lindsey Moerman had back to back kills for an 11-9 lead and Dordt controlled the rest of the set with Moerman getting the game winner--her fifth kill of the set.

Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter wtih 16 kills and Lindsey Moerman had nine with Jana Van Zanten putting down eight. Jessica De Stigter and Carrie Vande Kamp each had 21 assists and Dorinda Hibma had 19 digs.

Morningside was paced by Liz Sutherland with 13 kills and Monica Iverson had 40 assists.

Dordt will host the College of Saint Mary on Tuesday night in non-conference play and will travel to Midland on Saturday, October 16 in its next league action.
