Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The #19 ranked Dordt College Defender volleyball team bounced back from a loss to Hastings on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Briar Cliff on the road Wednesday night, October 6 in Sioux City. The Defenders won their 22nd match of the year with set scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-16, snapping a three match winning streak for Briar Cliff.
Dordt trailed early in set one, fighting back to tie it at 4-4 and 11-11. Dordt took its first lead of the set on a hitting error by Briar Cliff to make it 12-11. After a Briar Cliff timeout the Defenders surrendered a kill and the teams traded points with ties at 12, 13 and 14. A Briar Cliff hitting error gave Dordt the lead and the Defenders never trailed again with Danae Geels snapping a 17-17 tie with a kill and back to back Kendra Potgeter kills pushed the lead to 24-18 before Dordt won the first set.
Set two had Briar Cliff up at 5-4, 7-6, 9-7 and eventually 13-10 before Dordt tied it at 13-13 with a kill by Loy Griess, a hitting error and an ace serve by Kayla Broekhuis tying the set. Dordt eventually took the lead, only to relinquish it at 19-18 on a Lisa Oberhauser kill. A Dordt timeout later, the Defenders went to Kendra Potgeter for back to back kills and never trailed again in scoring four of the last six points of the set for a 25-22 win, getting the final point on a Loy Griess kill.
The two teams were tied at 8,9 and 10 in set three after Dordt trailed early at 6-2. The Defenders pulled away from a 16-14 advantage with four straight points and eventually won 25-16 with Jana Van Zanten finishing the contest with a kill.
Dordt totaled 42 kills and scored 14 points on blocks. Kendra Potgeter led the Defenders with 13 kills while Danae Geels and Loy Griess each had seven. Jana Van Zanten put down six and Brittany Landegent five. Bekah Posthuma and Jessica De Stigter each lofted 18 assists and Dorinda Hibma had 27 digs and two ace serves.
Briar Cliff was led by Monica Boeding and Sarah Wieseler with seven kills each. Erin Frank put up 27 assists and Amber Skoglund had 16 digs.
Dordt is 4-2 in the league and 22-4 overall while Briar Cliff is now 13-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday night, October 8, in GPAC action starting with a junior varsity match at 6:00 and a varsity contest at 7:30.
