(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team was lethargic in their first two sets with Morningside on Friday night and were unable to overcome that slow start in losing a 3-1 decision in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. The match is the only regular season meeting scheduled between the two teams.
Dordt held a lead of 14-12 in set one but a four point run gave the Mustangs a lead they would not relinquish, scoring eight of the last ten points on the way to a 25-18 win. The hosts rode that wave of momentum into set two and rolled to a 25-14 win using a diversified attack.
Set three belonged to the Defenders as they took an early 6-3 lead going to Kendra Potgeter, Danae Geels and Brittany Landegent for three straight points on kills. Morningside mounted a comeback and tied teh score at 11 and 12 before Dordt again opened a four point advantage at 17-14 with Geels providing back to back kills. The Mustangs again came back and tied it at 20 but never took the lead as a Kendra Potgeter kill stopped the Morningside run and back to back kills again by Geels gave Dordt a 25-23 win.
Set four was just as tight with ties at 6, 15 and 16. A Morningside run of four points in a row put them up 20-16 but the Defenders chipped away with a Jana Van Zanten kill followed by a hitting error by the Mustangs. Trading two points for one, the Defenders then managed a three point run to tie it at 22 with the third point in the splurge coming on an Amber Weingartner serve. The score was tied again at 23-23 with Morningside getting two straight points to close it at 25-23.
Dordt is now 22-9 and 9-3 in the conference while Morningside is 29-4 overall and 12-1 in the league.
