(Omaha, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team used a strong team serving effort and a career night by Danae Geels at the net to overcome a sluggish start and score a 3-1 win over the College of Saint Mary Flames in Omaha, Nebraska, Tuesday night.
The Defenders were slow in starting the match and got behind 8-6 to the Flames after the score was tied 6-6 on a Brittany Landegent kill. Dordt never got closer than three after the Flames scored three in a row to make the difference 12-8. The Flames rolled to the win 25-18 for the set one win.
Set two was all Dordt as the Defenders pulled away from a 7-5 difference with kills by Geels and a rare kill by Dorinda Hibma from the back row. Kendra Potgeter got on a roll as well, getting three kills in a row at one point and put away the set winner to even the match with a 25-14 triumph in set two.
Set three was tight early with seven ties up to 13-13. Jessica De Stigter sandwiched two service aces around a College of Saint Mary hitting error and the margin stood up as Dordt went on to win 25-21, getting the set winner on Flames net violation. Set four was just as tight with ten ties up to the 12-12 mark and an eleventh tie at 18-18 when the Flames scored on back to back blocks after Dordt seemingly had control of the set at 18-14. Dordt scored back to back points on a Betsy Van't Hul kill and a Potgeter kill only to have the Flames cut the difference to on at both 20-19 and 21-20. Back to back kills by Geels put the Defenders up 23-20 and a Brandee Schaap ace ended it at 25-21.
Kendra Potgeter led Dordt with 16 kills while Geels had 13 kills on 18 attacks with no hitting errors for a .722 kill efficiency. Jana Van Zanten added ten kills and had 12 digs. Dorinda Hibma had a team high 14 digs and Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga had 23 assists each. De Stigter, Schaap and Briana Wubben all had two ace serves in Dordt's 20th win of the season.
Cara Fleishman, the lone senior on the College of Saint Mary roster, unofficially had 15 kills to lead the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference member.
Dordt is 20-7 and will host Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan this weekend while the Flames fall to 10-14 overall.
