Dordt College Volleyball vs. Hastings

(Hastings, Nebraska) The Hastings College Broncos won a 3-1 decision over the Dordt Defenders in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball at the Lynn Farrell Arena on the campus of Hastings College Friday night, October 9.

The Defenders started slowly in set one, getting down 5-0 before rebounding for 10-7 lead on a Dorinda Hibma ace serve. Dordt worked the lead all the way up to 13-9 on a block but the Broncos came back to eventually tie it at 15 and the score was tied again at 16 and 17 before Hastings took the lead for good on a Dordt hitting error. The Defenders got to withing 22-21 on a Jana Van Zanten kill but couldn't get the lead and fell 25-22.

Set two had ties at 1, 3, 9 and 12 with Hastings pulling away with four points in a row and got up 16-12. Dordt whittled away at the difference and scored three in a row to get within 23-22 and tied it at 24-24 on a block but the Broncos scored the next two points, the final one on a hitting error by the Defenders and took a commanding 2-0 lead.

Set three looked like it would play out the same as the first two with Hastings leading 19-16. Dordt tied it 22-22 with Kendra Potgeter getting a kill. Potgeter got a kill for the lead and Dordt eventually won 29-27. The score was tied five times in set four, the last one at 7-7 with Hastings scoring three in a row. The Broncos built up a 14-8 lead and ending up winning by a 25-16 margin.

Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter's 12 kills and Jana Van Zanten had 11 in the loss. Brittany Landegent and Danae Geels had eight kills each. Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga had 23 and 19 assists respectively and Dorinda Hibma had 32 digs.

Dordt is now 18-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

Hastings was led by Kelsey Wells with 13 kills and Kendra Schwien had 12. Haley Beardsley put up 52 assists and Melynne Kessler got to 32 digs. Hastings is 22-4 overall and 6-2 in the GPAC.

Dordt will face Concordia on Saturday night, October 10 at 7:00.
