Dordt College Volleyball vs. Dana

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team won their fifth Great Plains Athletic Conference match in a row with a 3-1 win over the Dana Vikings in Sioux Center. The match, played on Saturday, October 3, was a a back and forth affair before Dordt blew it open in the fourth set.
Dana controlled much of set one and led 11-6 before the Defenders ran off six points in a row. Dana seemingly regained control with a 19-17 lead but the Defenders responded to a timeout with two straight points to tie it at 19 and the teams were tied at 20-20 before a kill by Jana Van Zanten made it 21-20 and the score was never tied again. Amberly Heslinga had a kill that found the back line to cut the difference to 23-22 but Dordt got a kills from Van Zanten to win it 25-22 in a set that featured 15 ties.
Dana led almost from start to finish in set two, taking the lead for good at 3-2 and held off several Dordt charges along the way. Dordt cut the lead to one on several occasions, the last at 21-20 but could never get the score tied and lost 25-21. The win was the last time Dana held the lead in the match. Dordt scored six of the first eight points in set three and controlled the set, winning on a Brittany Landegent kill for a 25-19 win and the Defenders rolled in set four 25-10. Landegent had three kills in the last five points to seal the win.
Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter's 13 kills and Brittany Landegent added 12 with Jana Van Zanten adding 10. Betsy Van't Hul came through with eight kills and Cassie Huizenga was good for 23 kills and Jessica De Stigter 21. Dorinda Hibma led all players with 33 digs and Huizenga had 11. Amber Weingartner and Brandee Schaap each had one ace serve. Steph Fykstra assisted on six blocks.
Dana was led by Kali Brayfield's 11 kills and Megan Higgins had ten kills. Erin Shanahan recorded 24 digs.
Dordt is 17-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference while Dana falls to 4-5 and 13-9. Dana faced three ranked opponents this week and went 0-3 against Doane, Northwestern and Dordt. Dordt will face Sioux Falls on Tuesday night in Sioux Center.
