Dordt College Volleyball vs. Midland Lutheran

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team rolled over a shorthanded Midland Lutheran team in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Friday night, October 2 at the De Witt Gym.
The Defenders led set one start to finish in taking a 25-16 win and pulled away from an 8-5 lead to take a 14-5 lead in set two and were never challenged on the way to a 25-8 win. Set three was the tightest of the night with Dordt trailing early by a 4-2 count. A Jana Van Zanten kill got the Defenders to within 4-3 and they proceeded to score four points in a row and led 6-4. Midland Lutheran hung in and trailed 19-18 before Dordt scored teh final six points of the match for a 25-18 win.
Dordt was led in kills by Van Zanten with a match high 13. Kendra Potgeter and Brittany Landegent each had nine and Steph Fykstra and Danae Geels each contributed four.
Cassie Huizenga was good for 21 assists and Jessica De Stigter had 18 assists with two ace serves. Dorinda Hibma led the team in digs with 14 while Van Zanten recorded 10.
Dordt improves to 16-6 overall and 4-1 in the league while Midland Lutheran falls to 4-12 and 0-7.
Midland Lutheran, playing without their leading offensive player, Amanda Hunt, was led by Halie Wewel's six kills.
Dordt will host Dana Saturday night with junior varsity action at 5:00 and varsity play at 6:30.
