Dordt College Volleyball vs. Sioux Falls

(Sioux Falls, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team survived a scare Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over Sioux Falls on the road to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
The Cougars, playing in front of a vocal crowd in set one, took the early lead, built it up to 13-8 and held off repeated Dordt College charges to win 25-20.
It was Dordt's turn to take the early lead in set two and the Defenders evened the match with a convincing 25-19 win in set two as they pulled away fro a 2-2 tie to establish a 14-6 lead on the way to a 1-1 tie in sets.
Set three had the momentum shift back to Sioux Falls as the Cougars scored five points in a row to go from up 12-9 to up 17-9. Dordt did make a run at the hosts but ran out of gas, getting as close as 19-16 before losing 25-17. Facing a must win situation in set four to extend the match, the Defenders fell behind 12-9 before running off five points in a row with Dorinda Hibma in serving. The junior got a service ace in for the tie at 12-12 and extended the lead to 14-12 before she was done as the Defenders rolled to a 25-16 win, scoring the final five points of the set. The two teams were tied at 1, 2 and 3 in set five before Dordt managed a 6-3 lead. The Cougars got as close as 8-7, but a tip by Betsy Van't Hul proved to critical with Dordt winning 15-9.
Dordt was led by Loy Griess's 15 kills and teh freshman was in on an assisted block. Kendra Potgeter was solid with ten kills and had two solo blocks and six assisted stops. Jana Van Zanten was held to eight kills but recorded eight digs with three solo blocks--two of them coming in set five. Brittany Landegent and April Solsma both had eight kills each and Landegent recorded two solo blocks with four assists. Van't Hul and Solsma each got to five assisted blocks.
Dorinda Hibma had 27 digs with two ace serves while Cassie Huizenga and Jessica De Stigter had 25 and 21 assists respectively. De Stigter recroded 13 digs and Brandee Schaap had two ace serves.
Dordt is 10-0 overall and 1-0 in league play while Sioux Falls drops to 6-4 and 0-1. Dordt travels to Northwestern on Saturday night for a GPAC match starting at 7:30.
