Dordt College Volleyball vs. Columbia-NAIA National Tournament Pool Play
December 3, 2008
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team dropped their second match of pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders dropped a narrow 25-23, 28-26, 24-26, 25-22 decision to the fifth seed in the tournament, Columbia (Missouri).
The Defenders got out quickly with a 21-15 lead on a Kristin De Ronde kill. After a Columbia timeout the Defenders surrendered a point but kept the lead at six after a service error by the Cougars. Flavia Lino came alive with two kills to ignite the Columbia run to get back to within 22-21. A block by Kendra Potgeter and April Solsma seemingly restored order, but, a Maria Omondi kill followed by a Lino kill tied the game at 23. Columbia then scored the final two points on a hitting error and a two-hit violation to squeeze out the win.
Set two was tightly contested with Dordt holding an 18-16 lead after a Dorinda Hibma ace serve. Columbia scored two in a row to tie it and the set was tied again at 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Dordt never served for the set with Columbia controlling the serve. A Kristin De Ronde tied the set at 26 but Omondi registered another kill and Columbia got a block to take the win 28-26.
Dordt, in danger of fading, trailed 15-10 in set three but mounted a comeback to tie it at 17 on a Potgeter kills and while Kelsey Van Dyke and April Solsma had kills to tie at 18 and 19. A De Ronde kill knotted the score at 20 and Potgeter got into the act to tie it at 21. Potgeter gave Dordt a lead at 24-23 on a kill and teamed up with Van't Hul for a 25-24 lead and an ace serve by Amber Weingartner forced set four 26-24.
Set four featured six ties up to 21-21 when Columbia scored two in a row for a 23-21 lead. A Brandee Schaap kill got Dordt back to within 23-22 but the Defenders couldn't keep the momentum in falling 25-22 on a Branco kill and a Lino kill.
The Defenders were led at the net by Kristin De Ronde's 15 kills while Kelsey Van Dyke had 14 and Kendra Potgeter 13. Cassie Huizenga had 24 assists and Jessica De Stigter had 23. Dorinda Hibma got to 39 digs and Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga got to 14 each with Van Dyke credited with 13.
Columbia was led by Lino's 27 and Maria Omondi had nine with Branco putting up 54 assists.
Dordt is 32-9 and face elimination from the tournament with an 0-2 mark. The Defenders must hope for a Mobile upset of Azusa Pacific, a win by Dordt over Mobile on Thursday and a Columbia win over Azusa Pacific to force a three-way tie for second place in their pool. Without those occurances, the Defender season will end after the Mobile match on Thursday at 11:00. Columbia is currently 41-3.
