Dordt College Volleyball vs. Morningside--GPAC Tournament Semifinals

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision in the Great Plains Athletic Conference semifinals at Morningside Wednesday night. The Defenders couldn't hold a 23-21 lead in set one, losing 25-23 and didn't recover until set three. Dordt lost set two 25-13, won set three 28-26 and couldn't get over the hump in set four, dropping the decision 25-21.
Dordt controlled much of set one and were in position to put the set away when Morningside called a timeout down 23-21. The Mustangs came back to tie it with a kill and a block and then won the set with a block at set point for the initial win.
Dordt couldn't get going in set two, trailing 8-4 when Morningside went on a seven point run to take control and roll to the 25-13 win. The Defenders did recover in set three and battled to a tie at 18-18 and were still tied at 21-21 when Larissa Veldhuizen gave Dordt a lead with a kill. Dordt still wasn't able to put the game away with Morningside tying it at 24-24 on a service error. A Kendra Potgeter kill put the Defenders up but an Amber Jarzynka kill made it 25-25. A block by the Mustangs put them up 26-25 but Potgeter responded with a tying kill. Morningside was then called for a net violation on a broken play and the Defenders won the set on an Amber Weingartner ace serve.
The hosts regrouped for a 10-5 lead in set four and held the Defenders at bay with the difference still five at 20-15. Dordt made a charge and a Jessica De Stigter ace drew Dordt to 21-20. Morningside withstood the challenge and outscored Dordt 4-1 to close the set and the match.
Kendra Potgeter led Dordt with 15 kills and was in on six block assists. Kristin De Ronde had 14 kills and Larissa Veldhuizen and Kelsey Van Dyke had eight kills each. Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga had 22 and 19 assists each while Dorinda Hibma got to 22 digs.
Addi Radke led Mornigside with 14 kills and Jamie Vander Kooi put down 13 and Amber Jarzynka had 11. Kali Angerman lofted 46 assists and had two ace serves. Vander Kooi led Morningside with 20 digs.
Dordt is now 31-7 and will await a potential at-large berth in the NAIA National Tournament while Morningside advances to the GPAC Finals on Saturday night against Northwestern. Both Northwestern and Morningside are assured of automatic berths in the NAIA National Tournament.
