Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff--GPAC Tournament Quarterfinals

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's volleyball team defeated the Briar Cliff Chargers in the quarterfinal round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday night in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders made short work of the Chargers in winning by set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19 for their 31st win of the season. The loss ends the Chargers' year.
Dordt led 7-5 in set one before rolling to an 11-5 lead with Kristin De Ronde knocking down two kills in the run. Briar Cliff made a charge to get to within 13-10 on an April Solsma hitting error but Solsma came right back for a block and the Defenders got the lead up to 17-10 on a Larissa Veldhuizen kill. Dordt eventualy pu tthe set away iwth a three point run to close it with back to back kills by Solsma and De Ronde.
Set three was very similar with Dordt pulling away from a 3-3 tie with five points in a row. Briar Cliff did narrow the lead to 8-5 but a Kelsey Van Dyke kill started a nother run and the Defenders were up by a 15-5 count with De Ronde knocking down yet another kill for the ten point lead. Briar Cliff never got closer than seven and loss 25-17 with De Ronde scoring the final point on a kill.
Set three was tied at 7-7 after Dordt trailed early. the Defenders used a five point run to go from down 5-7 to up 10-7 and never trailed again with Briar cliff keeping it within one at 15-14 but a four point spurt on kills by De Ronde, Van Dyke and Solsma, combined with a Briar cliff hitting error gave the Defenders an insurmountable lead and De Ronde finished the third set with here 15th kill of the night.
Dordt is now 31-6 while Briar Cliff finished the year 20-15. Dordt advances to play Morningside on Wednesday night at 7:30 in Sioux City in the GPAC semifinals.
Dordt was led by De Ronde with 15 kills on 18 attacks with no errors and Kelsey Van Dyke had 12 kills with two errors in 22 swings. Cassie Huizenga had 24 assists and Jessica De Stigter. Dorinda Hibma had 19 digs and Huizenga had a pair of ace serves.
Briar Cliff was led by Alex Anstine's nine kills and Samantha Bock got to 10 digs and Anstine 11.
This was the third season in a row that Dordt College has faced Briar Cliff in the quarterfinal round of the GPAC tournament with Dordt prevailing in each match.
