(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 3-1 match win over Nebraska Wesleyan Friday night, October 3 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders won sets one and two by scores of 25-21 and 25-22 but let a lead slip away in set three when they led big early but couldn't maintain the difference in dropping set three 25-21. Set four had Dordt up early with Wesleyan closing the gap but were unable to close the deal in dropping the set 25-20.
Set one featured two ties with Wesleyan battling back to tie the set at 16 and again at 19 but were never able to take the lead. Set two featured eleven ties and neither team led by more than four. The set was tied at 21-21 with Dordt surrendering two straight points on service errors.
Dordt was up 11-5 in set three but the Prairie Wolves closed the gap to 11-10 with five straight points, tying it at 13, taking the lead for good at 17-16 on the way to the come from behind win at 25-21. Set four was much the same with Dordt leading 15-10 on two kills by Kendra Potgeter and two by Kristin De Ronde for control but the visitors came back to cut the lead to 21-19 but couldn't get any closer with Potgeter and April Solsma teaming up for a block to make it 22-19 and the Defenders went on to win 25-20.
Potgeter led the Defenders with 20 kills while De Ronde had 13. Kelsey Van Dyke and April Solsma both had nine kills with Van Dyke also got to 15 digs. Jessica De Stigter put up 28 assists and Cassie Huizenga had 25. Dorinda Hibma led the team with 23 digs. Potgeter was in on four solo blocks and three block assists. Nebraska Wesleyan's Cara Ward had 13 kills and Abby Bade 12. Ashley Jedlicka put up 43 assists and Kelsey Elman had four ace serves. Erika Goldsmith had a match high 26 assists.
Dordt is now 20-4 overall and 4-1 in the GPAC while Nebraska Wesleyan is 8-4 and 2-2. Dordt hosts Doane tomorrow (Saturday, October 4) at 3:00.
