Dordt College Volleyball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders upended previously unbeaten Morningside in Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders won games one and two by identical 30-22 scores and hung on for a 30-27 win in game three for the sweep. The Mustangs entered the match ranked 12th in the country.
Dordt pulled away from a 7-7 tie in game one with seven unanswered points and Morningside never got closer than five the rest of the way. Game two was very similar with the teams tied at 11-11. Dordt built up an eventual 20-13 lead and Morningside was forced to use a timeout. The teams then traded serves with Dordt maintaining a 23-18 lead and pulled away to a 28-18 margin and coasted in for the 30-22 win.
Morningside scored the first three points of game three only to have the Defenders tie the game at four and again at five before getting in front 13-6. Morningside kept it close to 18-14 only to have the Defenders pull away 25-15 and pushed kept the lead at 10 up to 28-18. Morningside did make a charge with Kali Angerman serving to get four poits back and after a Dordt point, the Mustangs cut the lead to 29-27 with Catie Bobier serving but the Defenders went to Kendra Potgeter on a slide attack and the freshman delivered her tenth kill of the match and the game winner on the play.
Kristin De Ronde had 12 kills to lead Dordt with Kendra Potgeter and Larissa Veldhuizen each registering 10 kills a piece. Emily Van Voorst put up 37 assists and Dorinda Hibma had 20 digs. Liz Van Voorst also had 14 digs and the Defendrs got ten ace serves as a team. Brittany Haan had three and Betsy Van't Hul three as the Defenders improved to 2-2 in the GPAC.
Morningside was paced by Amber Jarzynka with 15 kills and Cassie Cheever had 10. Catie Bobier had 14 digs while Megan Tuttle and Michele Burkart each had 13.
Dordt will face Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday night and Doane on Saturday afternoon in their next action.
