Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders lost a 3-0 decision in GPAC volleyball Tuesday night at the Newman Flanagan Center on the campus of Briar Cliff University. The Defenders were within the slimmest of margins, but couldn't overcome the homestanding Chargers and dropped to 16-4 overall and 1-2 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
Briar Cliff held off a Dordt College charge in game one to take a 30-28 decision after leading 23-16 at one point. The game featured 11 ties. Game two was tight from start to finish with 10 ties before Briar Cliff pulled out the 33-31 decision. Dordt served for the win in game two at 29-28.
Game three was similar to game one in that Briar Cliff built a lead early ata 20-14 only to have Dordt tie it at 21 and 22 and again at 27. The Defenders took a brief lead at 27-24, scoring six out of eight points during the stretch only to have Briar Cliff scoring five in row on the way to an eventual 30-28 win.
Dordt was led by Larissa Veldhuizen's 18 kills while Kendra Potgeter and Kristin De Ronde each had 10 kills and Emily Van Voorst put up 43 assists and had two solo blocks. Dorinda Hibma led the team in digs with 32 and Betsy Van't Hul had 20 digs and Liz Van Voorst 19.
Briar Cliff was paced by Micaela Borer's 13 kills with Nicole Hoogeveen and Alex Anstine dropping 11 kills. Nicole Donovan led the Chargers with 44 assists.
Dordt is 16-4 overall and 1-2 in the league while Briar Cliff improved 8-5 and 3-1.
Dordt hosts their Classic this weekend and will face GrandView and Briar Cliff on Friday. Saturday the Defenders meet William Penn and Sioux Falls.
