Dordt College Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff-GPAC Quarterfinals

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team advanced to the Great Plains Athletic Conference semifinals with a 3-1 win over the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday night.

The Defenders made it two wins in three matches played against the Chargers with the victory, reversing a 3-0 win from early this season at the Newman Flanagan Center in the lone conference match of the season between the two. That match ended up being the difference between the fouth and fifth seed in the GPAC post-season tournament. Dordt College did win a match at Sioux Center between the two teams two weeks ago but that match didn't count towards the conference standings.

Dordt led early in game one but the Chargers countered with a three point run to go from 9-7 down to 10-9 up and never trailed again although it was tied at 10, 11, 12 and 13 and again at 21 before Briar Cliff pushed thorugh for the win 30-28.

The Defenders again got in front in game two, leading 13-10 before Briar Cliff tied it at 13. Dordt proceeded to outscore the hosts 17-7 the rest of the way to tie the match at one game a piece. Kristin De Ronde had 11 of her 18 kills in the first two games and Larissa Veldhuizen had a hot hand as well getting nine kills in the first two games. Dordt jumped to a 16-4 lead in game two with Liz Van Voorst serving 10 straight points before the Chargers dug in and got back to with in 22-17. Using a timeout, the Defenders ended the charge and went on to win 30-18. Game four featured two ties with Dordt trailing early at 6-3 but a run of seven points in a row put the Defenders in front for good and even through the Chargers got within three at 24-21 the Defenders had a enough left to win 30-24, their 26th win of the season.

The Defenders leaned heavily on Lindsey Van Wyk as the senior put down 21 kills with 33 digs. Kristin De Ronde had 18 kills Veldhuizen 14. Haylee Bakker added six kills and Emily Van Voorst had 48 assists while Liz Van Voorst had three ace serves and 25 digs. Traci Kooima led all players with 49 digs and also had two ace serves. Dordt College handled 87 Briar Cliff serves with just one reception error.

Briar Cliff was led by Micaela Borer's 11 kills and Renee Beiermann's seven.

Dordt advances to the semifinal round of the GPAC tournament and will face Hastings College on Wednesday night, November 8 at 7:30. The other semifinal match has Doane visiting Northwestern.
