Dordt College Volleyball vs. Wayne State

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team upset the 24th rated Wayne State Wildcats (NCAA Division II) 3-2 in non-conference volleyball at the De Witt Gymnasium on Monday night by game scores of 30-23, 30-27, 23-30, 29-31 and 15-13.

Dordt led game one start to finish behind the hot hitting of Lindsey Van Wyk who totaled 9 kills in the game. Game two had Wayne State in front early, holding a 15-12 lead before Dordt College ran off six points in a row to take the lead. The Wildcats battled back to hold a 24-23 lead but the Defenders again went on a run, scoring five points in a row to establish what turned out to be an insurmountable lead of 28-23 on the way to a 30-27 final.

Wayne State dominated game three for a 30-23 win and rallied from down 29-28 in game four, a contest that featured nine ties, for a 31-29 win.

Game five was as tight as the fourth with the visitors jumping out to a 4-2 advantage. Dordt tied it at four, only to see Wayne State retake the lead at 8-6. Dordt recovered for a tie at eight and saw ties again at 9-9, 10-10 and 12-12. A missed serve gave Dordt a 13-12 lead and two more points off broken plays gave Dordt the upset win.

Lindsey Van Wyk had 29 kills in the win whiile Kristin De Ronde added 20. Betsy Van't Hul had a season high nine kills while Larissa Veldhuizen had seven. Traci Kooima had a season high 48 digs and Emily Van Voorst put up 50 assists. Liz Van Voorst and Betsy Van't Hul both had 27 digs.

Wayne State was led unofficially by Emily Schroeder with 21 kills and Michelle Eckhardt had 19.

Wayne State is now 20-5 and lost for the first time to a team outside the national rankings while Dordt improves to 18-9.
